Thermal and optical switching of bistable iron compounds and possible applications

1993

Abstract Iron(II) coordination compounds with ligand field strengths close to the mean spin pairing energy may undergo thermal spin transition in the solid as well as in the liquid state. The thermodynamically stable state is high spin (HS) 5T2 (under Oh symmetry) with (t2)4 e2 electron configuration above the critical transition temperature Tc, and low spin (LS) 1A1 with (t2)6 electron configuration below Tc. The spin transition curve γHS(T) (molar fraction of HS molecules as function of temperature) can be abrupt or gradual, with or without hysteresis, or even with a plateau near Tc. Tc itself can vary over the whole temperature scale between the liquid helium region up to above room temp…

Metastable electronic states induced by nuclear decay and light

1994

Radioactive atoms incorporated in insulating solid-state compounds create various kinds of chemical and physical “after-effects” upon nuclear disintegration. Mossbauer emission spectroscopy of57Co-labelled coordination compounds has undoubtedly become the most informative technique to detect such after-effects like aliovalent charge and spin states of the nucleogenic iron atom resulting from the57Co(EC)57Fe decay, low energy excitations of crystal field and Zeeman states, linkage isomerism, radical formation with subsequent redox reactions, and others. We have extensively studied57Co-labelled complexes with [CoIIN6] cores employing time-integral and time-resolved Mossbauer emission spectros…

A Heteroleptic Push-Pull Substituted Iron(II) Bis(tridentate) Complex with Low-Energy Charge-Transfer States

2014

A heteroleptic iron(II) complex [Fe(dcpp)(ddpd)](2+) with a strongly electron-withdrawing ligand (dcpp, 2,6-bis(2-carboxypyridyl)pyridine) and a strongly electron-donating tridentate tripyridine ligand (ddpd, N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-dipyridine-2-yl-pyridine-2,6-diamine) is reported. Both ligands form six-membered chelate rings with the iron center, inducing a strong ligand field. This results in a high-energy, high-spin state ((5) T2 , (t2g )(4) (eg *)(2) ) and a low-spin ground state ((1) A1 , (t2g )(6) (eg *)(0) ). The intermediate triplet spin state ((3) T1 , (t2g )(5) (eg *)(1) ) is suggested to be between these states on the basis of the rapid dynamics after photoexcitation. The low-energy …

Spin crossover in hexakis(1-(2-chloroethyl)-tetrazole)iron(II) complexes; synthesis and magnetic properties

2002

Abstract The spin-crossover complexes [Fe(teec)6](X)2 (with teec=1-(2-chloroethyl)-tetrazole and X=BF4, ClO4, PF6) possess two iron(II) sites each having a different spin-crossover behaviour. The magnetic behaviour of the complexes obtained by slow crystallisation differs strongly from those obtained by precipitation. This difference results in either a spin crossover of 50% (X=ClO4, crystalline), two gradual steps (X=BF4, PF6), or two steps, of which one is gradual and the other having a thermal hysteresis (X=ClO4 precipitated). Both 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy and magnetic susceptibility measurements have been recorded as a function of T. The crystal structure of [Fe(teec)6](BF4)2 has bee…

Control of the spin state by charge and ligand substitution: two-step spin crossover behaviour in a novel neutral iron(II) complex

2014

The influence of the charge and steric hindrance on the spin state of a series of four monomeric Fe-II complexes derived from the tridentate tigands 2-(1H-benzoimidazol-2-yl)-1,10-phenanthroline (Hphenbi) and 2-(1H-benzoimidazol-2-yl-9-methyl-1,10-phenanthroline (Hmphenbi) and their deprotonated forms (phenbi(-), mphenbi(-)) are investigated. The crystal structure and magnetic properties show that [Fe(Hphenbi)(2)](BF4)(2)center dot 1.5C(6)H(5)NO(2)center dot H2O (1) and its neutral form [Fe(phenbi)(2)]center dot 2CHCl(3)center dot H2O (2) are low-spin complexes at 400 K due to the strong ligand field imparted by the terpyridine-like tigand. In contrast, the steric hindrance induced by the m…

Supramolecular Spintronic Devices: Spin Transitions and Magnetostructural Correlations in[Fe4IIL4]8+[2×2]-Grid-Type Complexes

2003

The magnetism of a series of tetranuclear complexes of the [Fe4IIL4]8+ [2x2]-grid-type was investigated, revealing the occurrence of spin transition behavior within this class of compounds. The phenomenon depends directly on the nature of the substituent R(1) in the 2-position on the central pyrimidine group of the ligand L. All Fe(II) ions in compounds with R(1) substituents favoring strong ligand fields (R(1)=H; OH) remain completely in the diamagnetic low-spin state. Only complexes bearing R(1) substituents attenuating the ligand field by steric (and to a lesser extent electronic) effects (R(1)=Me; Ph) exhibit spin transition behavior triggered by temperature. In general, gradual and inc…

A two-dimensional oxamate- and oxalate-bridged Cu(II)Mn(II) motif: crystal structure and magnetic properties of (Bu4N)2[Mn2{Cu(opba)}2ox].

2013

A new compound of formula (Bu4N)2[Mn2{Cu(opba)}2ox] (1) [Bu4N(+) = tetra-n-butylammonium cation, H4opba = 1,2-phenylenebis(oxamic acid), and H2ox = oxalic acid] has been synthesized and magneto-structurally investigated. The reaction of manganese(II) acetate, [Cu(opba)](2-), and ox(2-) in dimethyl sulfoxide yielded single crystals of 1. The structure of 1 consists of heterobimetallic oxamato-bridged Cu(II)Mn(II) chains which are connected through bis-bidentate oxalate coordinated to the manganese(II) ions to afford anionic heterobimetallic layers of 6(3)-hcb net topology. The layers are interleaved by n-Bu4N(+) counterions. Each copper(II) ion in 1 is four-coordinate in a square planar envi…

Functional Evaluation of THIQ, a Melanocortin 4 Receptor Agonist, in Models of Food Intake and Inflammation

2007

The central melanocortinergic system plays an important role in regulating different aspects of energy homeostasis and the immunomodulatory response. In the present study, we evaluated the in vivo activities of food intake suppression and anti-inflammatory activity of THIQ, which has been proposed to possess high and selective melanocortin-4 receptor agonistic activity in vitro. The results showed that THIQ (0.1, 0.3 and 1 nmol/rat, intracerebroventricularly) is less effective in reducing food intake and body weights of rats than the non-selective melanocortin receptor agonist melanotan II. Electron paramagnetic resonance measurements in mice brain tissue showed that THIQ at doses of 0.001 …

Glycyrrhetinic Acid Reverses the Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Hypocontractility to Noradrenaline in Rat Aorta: Implications to Septic Shock

2014

Abstract.: Septic shock and associated vascular hyporeactivity to vasoconstrictor agonists remain a major problem of critical care medicine. Here we report that glycyrrhetinic acid (GA), the active component of licorice, effectively restores vascular contractility in the model of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated rat aorta. GA was as effective as the NO synthase inhibitor NG-nitroarginine methylester. GA did not affect the vascular NO levels (measured by EPR spin trapping) and relaxations to l-arginine in LPS-treated rings as well as relaxation to S-nitroso-Nacetylpenicillamine in control rings. Thus, GA may represent an interesting alternative to NO synthase inhibitors in sepsis-associated …

Beta- and gamma-melanocortins inhibit lipopolysaccharide induced nitric oxide production in mice brain.

2003

The pro-opiomelanocortin-derived peptide alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) mediates many diverse physiological actions, including anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects. However, little is known about the physiological roles of the other melanocortins, beta- and gamma-MSH. Here, we investigated the effects of melanocortin peptides in an in vivo neuroinflammation model. Six hours following intracisternal (i.c.) administration of 10 microg lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to mice a five-fold increase in the nitric oxide (NO) level was seen in the animals' brains, when detected by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). All tested melanocortins, alpha-, beta-, gamma1- and gamma2-…
